Scam Targeting the Elderly

By Ken, July 20, 2009 10:46 pm

The San Carlos Police Department has just issued an alert about suspicious solicitors who may be targeting the elderly with a scam.

These individuals are going door-to-door selling a service to seal driveways.  Once they get an interested prospect, the solicitors work their way into the home to steal money.  Or they accompany the elderly victim to their bank to withdraw cash for them.

Please be on the lookout for the vehicles described below:

  • 2001 white Chevy King Cab pulling a trailer with a yellow tank inside.  The tank presumably holds some type of sealing material.
  • 1998-2000 Chevy King Cab pulling a trailer with a black tank inside.  Again, the tank has some type of sealing compound.

If anyone sees this group of individuals, call 911 immediately.  The police ask that you do not make contact with these people.

San Carlos to House New County Jail?

By Administrator, July 17, 2009 6:55 pm

San Mateo County is considering 7 sites for placement of a new county jail. Two of the locations being considered are in San Carlos:

  • 345 Shoreway, San Carlos 5.2 acres
  • 767 Industrial, San Carlos 2.7 acres

The County plans on holding a meeting this upcoming Wednesday, July 22, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the San Carlos Library to discuss their plans.

Does anyone recognize this news from the City Council meeting this past Monday?  Seems like a lot of people are surprised to hear about this.

For more information, please visit the County’s web site.

On Thursday July 9, 2009 at approximately 11:00 am, a resident in the 2400 block of Eaton Avenue observed a vehicle pull up and park across the street from his home.  The resident then saw two males that he believed were associated with the vehicle enter the backyard of a neighbor’s home.  The resident wrote down the license plate to the vehicle and notified the homeowner who was out for the morning.  A couple of hours later when the homeowner arrived home she discovered her home had been burglarized.

Investigation into the crime resulted in the identification and arrest of two suspects for residential burglary and possession of stolen property. Both suspects were taken into custody on July 10, 2009 and booked into the San Mateo County jail.  The suspects have been identified as Jose Pinon, 18 years old of East Palo Alto and Nicolas Pinon Aguilar, 18 years old of Redwood City.

On Friday July 10, 2009 at 1230 am, a resident in the 200 block of Park Avenue, observed a vehicle pull up to his neighbors house and a subject got out of the car with a flashlight.  The subject began to look into a car window but when he saw the resident he got back into the car and left.  The resident immediately called the police and provided a description of the vehicle.  Within a couple of minutes an officer spotted the vehicle and made a traffic stop.  One of the occupants, a juvenile, was found to be on probation and in violation of the terms of his probation.  The juvenile was arrested and booked into juvenile hall.

In the first incident, the resident’s actions played an important role in the identification of the suspects and the recovery of a portion of the stolen property.  In the second incident, the resident’s actions in all likelihood prevented a theft from taking place.  Both incidents serve as excellent examples of what can happen when residents are willing to become involved and work in partnership with the police.

Trash Scavengers At Work

Trash scavengers ride through White Oaks neighborhood

Trash scavengers ride through White Oaks neighborhood

On Thursday nights in White Oaks, groups of scavengers rifle through your trash and recyclables, frequently looking for cans they will take for the redemption value. They’re at work before dark. And since there were 2 identity theft cases reported to the police between June 6 – July 6, perhaps some of these scavengers are obtaining this information from your trash.

A reader passed along a photo of two scavengers in action on July 9. They’re getting very clever now: one uses a kiddie bike trailer to haul his loot.

The police will respond to your call about the scavengers, but it get a lower priority depending on other calls.

This was not reported to the police until Sunday.

New Traffic Camera

By Administrator, July 6, 2009 8:33 am

A second red light photo enforcement camera went live on July 2 at the intersection of Whipple and Veterans Boulevard  in what police say is an effort to make the busy thoroughfare safer (and to make money for the City of Redwood City).

The first red light camera catches eastbound violators driving on Whipple toward the freeway overpass.
